Desalination Efficiency

Heyya, what is the efficiency in kWh/m^3 for the current desalination plant? The description mentions that it requires an intensive use for energy and I’m wondering if the kWh/m^3 is similar to other plants, or if it older and hence has a lower efficiency.

Hi Matthew,

When we mentioned that the mechanical desalination is energy intensive, we’re talking about the energy requirements of the reverse osmosis process in general.

We’ll try if we can find that specific information from TSIRC. In the meantime, I’m curious as to what other desalination systems are you comparing. Are you able to provide a link here?

None specifically, though the average usage is between 1-3kWh/m^3 from my research.

Hi Matt,

We still don’t have the figures for the efficiency of the desalination plant, but based on our recent chat with a TSIRC staff, the desalination facility they have is a mobile or portable one (brand name is Calpeda) that they use for emergency purposes only. We were also told that it can fit in a boat.

When researching possible options for desalination plant systems, could we also include and consider desalination plant systems that are in their proof-of-concept stage? That is, desalination plant designs suggested by researchers, but that are yet to be actioned?

All the information we have on desal plants are on this thread. However, towards the end of the stakeholder panel event, our TS representative did provide additional information. You could request your academic for a recording ( we did send it to them), to explore more.

1. Per my understanding, it is a diesel generator
2,3 We currently do not have more information on this, but we were told the current mobile RO desal system is of a brand named Calpeda.
