Hi Team,

Some of your sources reference “basic water filtration” is currently in use in the village. I was just wondering what filtration methods they’re currently using?

Filtration methods currently in use include:
– Retention ponds. From WaterAid Australia Impact Report 2022/23 ‘In Timor-Leste we have partnered with a local community development organisation, FHTL, and a permaculture organisation, Permatil, to guide communities in how they can dig retention ponds and reforest the slopes uphill of their water springs to reduce erosion and increase the volume of water soaking into the groundwater.’

Hi Evelyn,

Do you have any resources on how these water retention ponds operate in this specific case? I’ve found the concept and basic design from Permatil however I’m having a harder time finding specifics regarding the 2022/2023 project in Loidahar.

In particular I’d like to know if the water is still potable during the rainy season (it’s suggested to be potable by Anthony in the discussion “Purpose of Water Retention Ponds (2.1)”)?

I would imagine during the rainy season sediment and runoff renders the water too dirty to be potable (without significant filtration), and it is not until the dry season when plants have had time to absorb pollutants and sediment to settle that it becomes potable. Is my understanding correct here?

Thank you for your follow-up question.

Unfortunately I do not have any specific resources on water retention ponds specifically in Loidahar. The implementation of the water retention ponds in Loidahar is publicly limited. However, I would agree with your reasoning here. In the wet season additional water treatment processes would need to be utilised to meet drinking water standards and remove sediments, debris etc.
