Hi Dylan and team
For Islander communities, preserving their culture is paramount; an urgency heightened as climate‑driven sea‑level rise compels many Saibai Islanders to relocate to Cairns, Townsville and other mainland centres, disrupting their traditional livelihoods.
Knowledge about Torres Strait Islander culture is limited however because communities can only share information that gives you a basic level of understanding (“outside knowledge”). Information private and sacred to families and communities (“inside knowledge”) cannot be shared with the greater public.
We encourage your team to do some research into Kalaw Kawaw Ya phrases that are not just everyday, but also offer deeper meaning. Respectfully weaving these into your design is a great way to acknowledge and help to present Island culture
