      Hi,
My group and I would like to know where the plastic waste collected on Saibai Island goes. Another question we had was if it is possible to transport plastic waste to mainland facilities on a weekly or fortnightly basis? If we cannot transport to mainland facilities due to biosecurity laws, what would be the nearest recycling facility?

      Thank you!

        Hi Noor,

As stated in the design brief, there is currently no recycling option on Saibai Island. Domestic waste is collected free of charge for residential properties twice per week and taken to the landfill facility.

The nearest recycling facility is in Cairns, Qld. In terms of what’s taken to Cairns, this is an option for residents or commercial businesses if they can shoulder the cost of waste transport (also taking the biosecurity measures in consideration).

If you haven’t already, take a look at TSIRC’s Waste Management and Recycling page which has some more information.

        Hope that helps.

        Cheers,
        Anthony
