      Hey,

Our team was wondering if there was an approximation of how much drinking water is being imported (litres) to Saibai and what the cost of this is. Thanks

        Hello Dinel and team

Rainwater is the primary source of potable water on Saibai. Rainwater is collected from various sources including a large lined central lagoon, secondary uncovered lagoon catchments, and household rainwater tanks.

Beyond rainwater, small scale reverse osmosis units can supplement potable water supplies however these mobile desalination units require generator hire and diesel fuel cells to run.

The local IBIS grocery store does provide bottled water, which is occasionally purchased for emergency usage (during acute water shortage periods or incidents such as when a stomach bug affects children at the local school).

With a population of just under 340, you’ll be able to make some estimates based on approx bottled water consumption and cost.

        Cheers
