      Good Afternoon Team,

During my research, I have come across some information that states the jetty has recently been removed following a conditions assessment and 2 safety incidents. Can you please confirm this information?

Additionally, there seems to be an operational plan endorsed by TSIRC that states plans for a replacement jetty in 2025 have been organised including a tender agreement. Is there still a need for this design area?

        Hi Mark,

Great to see that you’ve been doing your own research in addition to what we have provided – we really encourage this to further your understanding of the context.

Are you able to please share the link to the resource you found with the conditions assessment and safety incident reports for the jetty?

I’ve had a look at the TSIRC Operational Plan 2024-25 (pg 8.) and yes that’s correct – tender has been awarded and the design and early works are already underway for the repair or replacement of the jetties. However, there is still a need for this design area, 3.1 Safe and dignified marine access, to enable safe and dignified marine access for a range of smaller watercraft.

Based on your understanding of the community on Saibai Island, what are the alternatives that you think would best serve local needs?

        Kind regards,
        Anthony

          <Hi Anthony,

Rick Plain and Peter Price (Royal Haskoning DHV) conducted a conditions assessment on the Torres Straight marine infrastructure. PSB

Following the assessment they delivered their findings during the IPWEA Asset Management Symposium where they stated the closure of the Saibai jetty.

I would like to see an accessible ferry terminal and vessel pontoon at Saibai Island. This simple design allows deep water access out to 100 metres and can withstand tidal variations of up to 9 metres, while also maintaining a DDA-compliant gangway elevation with wheelchair access. With support from TSIRC a ferry service may be established for inter-island travel including PNG to promote economic growth.

          Thanks for your time.
