When I was browsing the ‘Water Retention’ section in the 360 Interactive Walkthrough, the slide displays a photo of a large dug-out area covered with grasses that has the caption ‘A typical water retention pond’.

However, the gallery for Design Area 2 – Water Access and Quality shows two dark red storage tanks captioned ‘one of the 11 water retention ponds in Loidahar’; this can also be found on Page 29 of the Challenge Brief pdf.

Therefore, my question is, what design are we following? Are we creating an out-of-the-ground structure, or are we designing a dug-out space (or is it up to our own discretion)?

If it is a dug-out area, I am not exactly sure how we could innovate further from the ponds that WaterAid has already constructed.
I would also assume that it seems to be a challenge to get these in-ground ponds down to a household level, considering the undulating terrain that is present in Loidahar, meaning not every household could have the room or the flat area to support an in-ground pond.

Hope it all makes sense, thank you in advance.

        Hi Harvey,

There are 11 large capacity retention ponds in Loidahar that support the village as a whole. The design opportunity under 2.1 is specifically for ideas for retention ponds at the household level. These could be above or below ground, but would certainly need to consider the undulating terrain. How could these ponds also align with design opportunity 2.3 for “affordable and durable household rainwater collection and storage systems”?

        Cheers,
        Anthony
