Good evening! We are planning on designing a solution for the broken iron filtration unit at the Ranger Base, and we just have a couple of questions to help us streamline our design process:

      1. How does the current iron filtration system at the Ranger Base operate, and what specific part of it is broken (causing iron to be insufficiently filtered out of the Stewart River water)?
      2. What are the current iron concentrations in the Stewart River source water vs. the post-filtration output?
      3. How long has the system been in place, and when did it begin underperforming?
      4. How often does the iron filtration system require maintenance, and what skills or tools are needed by the Rangers to repair or clean it?
      5. How many people use the system and what is the daily water demand?

Thank you! We appreciate your responses and are looking forward to helping improve water potability for the Lama Lama community.

        Hi Madeleine,

It’s great to see that you’ve chosen your design area. While I don’t have all of this information, I hope this helps:

I’m not 100% sure what specific part of the filter is broken. It is not in operation and has been bypassed for majority of time since its installation in 2018.

The water quality data collected from two bores on a site visit shows iron levels of 1.01 and 1.25mg/L, exceeding the ADWG of 0.3mg/L.

You can assume that the water serves the community of approximately 40 people. While, I do not have exact numbers for water usage per person, it should be noted that water usage is much lower than in other areas of Northern Queensland. You can make reasonable assumptions on water demand through desktop research in similar areas.

        Kind regards,
        Evelyn
