      Hi EWB team,

I’m hoping you can help confirm the intended scope of Design Area 6.5.

My current understanding of the problem is that when you say “design approaches” you’re referring to challenges with the current process of managing water across the wet and dry seasons.

Since the community already has tanks, pumps, and basic infrastructure, I’m trying to understand whether the focus could be on improving how water is currently managed (systems design), or whether you’re expecting new or upgraded physical components as part of the solution (physical/hardware design).

I’m also wondering whether 6.5 is intended to focus mainly on active water storage (tanks, pumps, wells, bores), or if passive storage (soil, vegetation, infiltration, landscape itself) are also considered within scope.

      Thank you,
      Lehyina

        Hi Lehyina,

        Thank you for your questions.

The design opportunities are created with the intention that students will specify their focus as you read through the brief and begin to make your own interpretations.
I see that you’ve identified the challenge in community already (managing water resources over the wet and dry seasons). Now, the two focuses that you’ve mentioned above could both be considered as options to address the challenge – this would be part of the ideation phase in the engineering design process. In the screening phase, you will evaluate the pros and cons of each idea and how well they meet your design considerations. We are not expecting a particular design from your team. Instead, your focus should be on a solution that best meets the needs of the community and this might take many different forms.

As for your last point, I would say that this design area focuses on active water storage.

        I hope this helps.

        Kind regards,
        Evelyn
