EWB Research Challenge

 

The EWB Research Challenge presents a number of individualised challenges, with a specific thematic focus that requires targeted impact-oriented research. EWB scopes real-world opportunities to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a broad range of community partners, creating briefs that allow students to ground, apply and develop their research skills with an actual scenario. Academics and students are highly supported, to help generate impactful research. This support also aims to foster key breadth skills and builds student employability.

 

 

We work with a range of different community-based partner organisations across the Asia-Pacific to produce a range of well-scoped research briefs in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This provides students with a selection of opportunities to apply their skills to an impactful real-world opportunity, giving scope to practice and growing key breadth skills such as stakeholder management, cultural awareness and communication.

The EWB Research Challenge incorporates training workshops and online training modules to support student work, which grows their competency in human-centred approaches and professional breadth skills. This unique aspect gives students a true point of difference and greater employee appeal for when they enter the job market. Elements such as the reverse project brief process provide a unique opportunity for students to practice client engagement and expectation management.

Introductory online lectures and forums enable an ongoing dialogue to support the research process. Students undertaking the challenge as an individual research piece receive access to inter-university training workshops, exclusive online training content and a meeting with a live community partner to support with context and data. Top reports are given specific feedback from our Research Challenge team.

 

Research projects are available across a broad range of thematic areas including:

  • Water, Sanitation, Hygiene: Assess and optimise the Paradise Shelter quick install design.
  • Energy: Establishing and optimising the efficacy of biodigester technology at low temperatures.
  • Shelter: Develop a low-tech shake table for initial seismic testing.
  • Education: Designing an ethical and sustainable way of facilitating digital knowledge sharing in challenging contexts.
  • Assistive Technology: An investigation of Internet of Things implementation into disability inclusion projects in rural Cambodia.
  • Engineers in Society: Establishing the Role of Engineers in tackling SDG13: Climate Action.
